Plan a family night out this Halloween with these toddler-friendly horror and fantasy movies.
There is very little left for Halloween ! That date of the year when even the little ones enjoy being scared , whether it’s watching a movie at home or going out to ask for candy on the street. Although it is true that this tradition is not yet well established in Spain, children enjoy it like never before every time they have the opportunity. Because it is fun to be able to go out in disguise, to scare friends; Children see Halloween as the ideal time to stop being afraid of monsters that, on other occasions, could actually scare them. But on this day they are the monsters, they are the witches, they have magic! And above all, they can ask for candy without their parents looking at them disapprovingly. Your dreams come true!
Perhaps you are not very into celebrating Halloween, or perhaps the area in which you live is not prepared enough for children to go out and ask for sweets. But that doesn’t mean we should leave them without having such a fun party! We can always resort to alternative plans, like watching a movie at home. And it is that, surprising as it may seem, there are “horror” films that are suitable for children, either because they are not scary or because they are specially designed for them. Do you want to see some? We give you ideas!

1. ‘THE RETURN OF THE WITCHES’
‘ The Return of the Witches ‘, or ‘Hocus Pocus’, is a favorite of children, regardless of the time. It is a funny movie, where witches are not so scary, and the protagonists are children who have to live different adventures on Halloween . Can there be a better option? This is probably a good alternative when children are around ten or twelve years old, when watching cartoons can be a bit more boring.
2. ‘CASPER’
The ghosts , and the like witches, also deserve special recognition for Halloween. And what better ghost than Casper , the kindest and most tender of all, with a heart so big it barely fits in his chest. A story of friendship, of family love, mixed with some doses of humor and the odd shock, will make all the children enjoy for a little over an hour and a half.
3. ‘THE ADDAMS FAMILY’
Continuing with the classics, we cannot forget about the Addams family . A fun and hilarious movie where they exist, that will make your children see the good side of the dark and the different. With a gothic style and a very particular humor, this family will make you all laugh without exception.
4. ‘BITELCHUS’
We continue with films that all children should see at some point in their life, especially if Halloween is approaching: ‘ Bitelchus ‘. It is true that this is more recommended for children between ten and twelve years old , since the little ones may not understand it, or even get scared at some point or another with Bitelchus. But the older ones will enjoy it immensely! In addition, it has a great soundtrack and a spectacular cast.
5. ‘HOTEL TRANSILVANIA’
But do not suffer, because we also have options for the little ones, such as ‘ Hotel Transilvania ‘. In this animated film, the monsters will have a big heart and will come to teach great values to the children, while they have fun. The beauty of these types of films is that they have a moral, and they always contribute something. And what better time to see it than on Halloween!
6. ‘MONSTERS S.A’.
This movie is much more modern than the ones we mentioned in the top positions , but ‘ Monsters SA ‘ deserves to be on this list. Because with it you will get your children to learn values, as with ‘Hotel Transilvania’. Not only that, but who can say no to monsters that frighten humans but are more afraid of us than we are of them. Fun as hell!
7. ‘SCOOBY DOO 2: UNLEASHED’
Anyone from Scooby Doo would be a good option, but we have chosen to recommend this second part since it was one of the best received. In this case, the monsters will always be human … or not! You will have to wait until the end to find out, and the children will surely enjoy the process.
8. ‘MALEFIC’
Relatively recently, Disney released what has been considered one of the best films of all its history: ‘ Maleficent ‘ , where it told the story of the evil witch who bewitched Sleeping Beauty. Knowing the other side of the coin can be scary, but also very rewarding. A good way to empathize with the wicked, while enjoying the performance of the incredible Angelina Jolie.
9. ‘HARRY POTTER
The best known saga in history could not be missing from this list, of course! And it is always a good time to see Harry Potter , but starting to entertain children on Halloween , with all the theme of magic and wizards, is even better. If the children are small, you can see ‘ The Philosopher’s Stone ‘ and ‘ The Secret Chamber ‘; Over the years, surely they will ask you to see the following ones, which they will surely understand better as they are a little older.
10. ‘MATILDA’
Let’s go back to the classics for a moment, and we can’t forget the most famous little witch of all: ‘ Matilda ‘ . A girl who feels misunderstood and then discovers that she is capable of harboring great magic within her. A story of overcoming, of sweetness, capable of teaching courage even to the smallest ones, and with which you will not have to have any age restriction. A jewel of children’s cinema that your children will surely enjoy, and you will enjoy!
Halloween nights with popcorn and trinkets are always more enjoyable, especially if they are accompanied by a good movie and a great desire for fun. In this way, children will have a special night each year where they will be allowed to be scared … Although in small doses! Enjoy with them, since they will not always be children. They will soon go on to prefer movies like ‘Paranormal Activity’, and maybe you don’t feel like it so much.
