5 soothing baby teas

Giving tea to calm the babies is a very old habit . Despite this, some mothers still have many doubts when it comes to giving tea to their babies.

Can I really give tea to my child? From what age is it recommended? Can babies have any kind of tea?

These are just some of the doubts that mothers have when they think about the best time to introduce tea into their children’s routine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises not to offer any other liquid or food to the baby before six months of age. Before that, the child’s immune system is not yet formed and some herbs may be allergenic to children . Just like water and herbs can dilute the protective factors in breast milk.

Another important point is that the baby’s stomach is still very small in the first few months. Offering tea can fill the small space with a liquid without any nutritional value, which will end up decreasing milk intake. Consequently this will affect the child’s weight gain.

So, before the child is six months old, not even chamomile tea to calm the colic, just offer milk. From six months onwards, teas can be included with the baby’s food , if this is the mother’s wish..

However, not all teas are approved for consumption by children.

5 soothing teas released after the baby is six months old

After the sixth month of life, you can gradually introduce tea to your baby’s diet. However, some teas should not be offered due to their allergenic properties.

Herbs that contain caffeine , such as mate, black and green tea, should also be avoided , as they do not soothe the baby, they are stimulants and contain substances that hinder the absorption of calcium and iron .

Here are five delicious teas that you can use to calm your baby:

  • Chamomile: Chamomile tea is a delicious natural tranquilizer and you can use it not only to soothe colic, but also to make your baby have a better night’s sleep. Plus, it’s great for lessening nausea for little ones;
  • Mint: Mint tea has a very pleasant taste and helps your baby to relax. Other properties of peppermint tea are to aid digestion and prevent colds and flu;
  • Fennel: Fennel also aids in the digestion of babies and in relieving gas and colic. It is usually well tolerated by the little ones due to its sweet taste;
  • Lemon balm: Lemon balm has several different medicinal properties. It aids digestion, is a great soothing tea and relieves cough, gas and cramps.
  • Capim-Santos: Capim- Santos is great for helping your baby’s bowel function.

These are the most popular teas that can be offered without fear to children. There are no contraindications . However, it is interesting to talk to the pediatrician about the recommended amounts and the best times to offer tea to babies.

Always offer the baby tea without sugar or any other sweeteners. It is not recommended to offer sugar to children before the age of two because sweets addict the taste buds and lead to bad eating habits, in addition to causing cavities in the teeth .

To prepare it, infuse the herb in hot water for a few minutes. Strain and serve warm.
