The change from primary to secondary education, at age 12, is a very important and complicated change in which we have to help our sons and daughters.
When children go from Primary Education to Secondary Education, it is certainly a big step for them. They go from being in a school where they have lived with their classmates almost all their lives, where they have learned everything they know -in an academic concept- and suddenly, they realize that primary school is too small and that they must move on to another place, bigger and with other standards.
Secondary education is usually accompanied by many ups and downs since it is an age in which children stop being children to become adolescents . They are at that stage where they are on the long road to learning to be adults. The change at the academic level is also greater and is that if in primary they had the figure of the teacher to be able to learn better and have a more organized structure, in the institute this is blurred a bit, giving students more freedom to organize His studies.

A COMPLICATED TRANSITION
For many it can be a difficult road and adaptation can also be somewhat difficult. The students should meet new teachers, often being in a new center, have new colleagues, different schedule and more demanding academically .. . and all that at the same time. Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) is not so simple, and children need the support of their parents to better cope with this situation … it is essential to be able to contribute to a good adaptation and school success.
Boys and girls who pass from 6th grade of Primary to 1st of ESO do so at the age of 12/13 and after having completed 6 levels in Primary Education. ESO has four different courses for students to learn basic elements of culture and society. In this way they will be able to better decide where they want to develop professionally in adulthood and at the same time, be good citizens.
CHANGES FROM PRIMARY EDUCATION TO SECONDARY EDUCATION
Students who go to 1st of ESO go from being the oldest in the Primary school to being the youngest in the Institute. They must live with students who are up to 18 years old and even with adults. As I have commented previously, some of the changes that will have to be faced are:
– Change of school. They go from the Primary center to the Institute to teach ESO – Compulsory Secondary Education-.
– Changes in student control. Students have greater freedom and independence.
– Change of teachers and classmates.
– Changes at the academic level. They have more complicated content, greater demand and more teaching hours.
A NECESSARY ADAPTATION
It is very important that students adapt correctly to changes in order to have a good academic success, since the fact that they do not adapt could lead to school failure that would have serious consequences in the later levels of their education. It is because of all this that families play a very important role in the academic life of their children . There are a few ways to help your children adapt to these changes successfully:
– Maintain open communication with the children and with the children’s teachers .
– Transmit security to children and provide them with confidence through certain freedom and responsibility.
– Help them in the study : that they have a quiet place in their home and that they acquire good work and study habits at home.
– Value effort more than results.
– See to it that they are well fed, rested and in a good emotional state.
