FIRST WEEK OF LIFE
You probably don’t know it, but a newborn can lose up to 10% of their weight during the first days of life. This should not scare you since it is absolutely normal due to the expulsion of urine and how little they eat. It is quite normal that during the first days of life, the baby is satiated with the mother’s colostrum . The stomach is still quite small so you need little to be fully satiated . From the fifth day, the baby should start to gain a little weight and be at the weight he was at birth. If, on the other hand, he does not gain anything, it is important to go to the pediatrician to observe the reason why the child does not gain any weight.
FIRST MONTH
During the first month and a half the baby will gain about 20 grams a day and about 140 a week. As the days go by, the little one can no longer feed on colostrum and needs breast milk to be able to provide a series of nutrients to the body. As the weeks go by, the baby’s stomach increases so he needs more and more milk. The same happens with powdered milk and is that as the baby grows, the intakes are greater and greater.
SECOND AND THIRD MONTH
The normal thing is that from the second month of life, the baby has been gaining the established weight without problems and has become accustomed to the mother’s breastfeeding. From now on the baby should be putting 150 or 200 grams a week . Although each child is different and can put more or less grams than established.
FROM THE FOURTH TO THE SIXTH MONTH
During these months the baby will gain about 150 grams more or less per week and about 600 grams per month. However, the important thing during this time is that the baby feels strong and grows without any problem. As for their diet, it should be based on breast milk or artificial milk.
FROM THE SIXTH TO THE NINTH MONTH
From the sixth month the weight stabilizes and the baby will only gain about 80 grams a week or almost half a kilo a month. The important thing in these months is that the baby begins to supplement the milk with foods such as fruit or vegetables.
FROM THE NINTH MONTH TO THE YEAR
In these last three months the baby will gain less weight than ever and it is normal for him to take about 300 grams at most per month. Once the baby is one year old, it should triple its birth weight, although as I have already mentioned above, there are children who weigh a little less than what is established and others who weigh a little more.
Pediatricians advise not to obsess over the baby’s growth rate as every child is different. The important thing is to give him an adequate diet that helps him grow healthy and with hardly any health problems.
