Is it better for my son to study something he likes or to have more professional opportunities?
Parents want our children to have the best possible future, and sometimes our plans can clash with theirs.
When a teenager manages to graduate from school and even high school there always comes a stage of reflection where one has to think about how to continue their studies. It is a difficult decision because many factors are involved and not just the will. Right now, as the market is today, we have to be minimally realistic if we want to succeed. But this does not mean choosing studies that do not convince us just to secure a salary in the future.

IS IT BETTER TO CHOOSE BY VOCATION OR BY POSSIBILITY OF PROFESSIONAL EXIT?
If your child has always had a dream (a vocation) and is convinced that he wants to do it, our duty as parents is to encourage and motivate him from the beginning. The power of the word is very important and if he is really committed to that vocation you should be by his side supporting him. What good is having a good job if you go to work with a stick face every day? People who do something they do not like end up being noticed in the desire of the day to day, their performance is worse, they end up overwhelmed, bored and even bitter. Is it really worth earning a little more if your quality of life is going to be worse? If as an adult you have been unlucky enough to work in an occupation that you don’t like, would you want the same for your child?
As is the situation in many countries, most people prefer to play it safe. However, people who really do what they love always encourage young people to pursue their dream and never give up because only then will they achieve it. Great artists from all walks of life affirm that if people really want to do what they like, they will practice so much that they will become really good at what they do, in their vocation . It is not the races that have exits, but the desire that the person puts into it. Furthermore, there is no correct answer because you never know what may happen in the future and the job market is continually changing. For example, some of the most sought-after jobs now didn’t exist a decade ago. In other words, what may seem safe now may be stagnant in a few years.
It seems that currently the careers with the highest percentage of employment are Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration and Management, and finally Economics. As well as all the careers that are related to new technologies and the Internet.
SO WHAT STUDIES SHOULD I RECOMMEND TO MY CHILD THEN?
– Inform yourself first.
If your child is planning a career and is hesitating between the two, help him find answers to his questions. Join together for the orientation talks given on most campuses every year. You can also go to professional counselors to inform you about all the available university offerings.
On the other hand, you can find out without having to leave home. If you enter the website of the Ministry of Education you can see all the teaching programs that are in each university as well as the professional profiles that the graduate can choose after obtaining the degree, the masters available in the case of wanting to specialize and a long etcetera .
– You should never push.
Advise yes but not oblige. Don’t try to pressure him to choose one career or another. If the student chooses a career without enthusiasm, he will end up abandoning it sooner or later, so that the only thing you will achieve is to lose money. In the event that he finishes it, if he finally still does not like your son, he will end up boring his work or even unconsciously taking a grudge against you. Think that at the end of our life almost a third of us will spend it working. Is it really worth it?
If you firmly believe that the studies that your child wants to follow are going to stagnate him, make sure at least that he has been informed correctly. Exploring the sector together to see if the career has a real exit depending on what your child is looking for, the idea he has may be very different from what is in reality . He also has to know how to choose a realistic option, for example, if he wants to be a singer but unfortunately he does not have a good voice, no matter how hard he tries, he will not achieve it, then if it is recommended that you advise him, but always with assertiveness and respect.
– The best advice you can give your child is to choose a profession that allows him to be self-employed.
It is good advice that you can give your child. If you want to pursue your dream forward, however, could you be self-employed in the event you cannot find a way out otherwise? As the market is, if your children want to follow their vocation, they may in the future have no choice but to work as a self-employed person , in order not to have to depend on the few positions available from the Administration.
You should also propose to study abroad for a year , for example with the famous Erasmus scholarship . Some careers have hardly any exit if it is not complemented with a language. In addition, it is a fact that knowing languages opens many doors when it comes to finding a job.
– What if you do n’t want to study for a degree?
In the event that your child is interested in studying another type of degree, you should not be overwhelmed. They have put it into our heads that a career assures you a future when sadly it is no longer like that. With a career, there are always more options, although if your child does not see himself with the will or sufficient capacity, it is not worth wasting time or effort for it.
