My son doesn’t want to go to college
All parents want our children to study as much as possible, but the important thing is to help them find the job they like and support them.
Before starting more in depth with this topic, the first thing I want to convey to you is that you should not be afraid if your son tells you that he does not want to opt for university for his future. Why? Well, it is important to understand that he is saying no to university but other options remain open that are totally perfect to continue with your life. The negative question is if you tell us that you do not want to study or college or anything else . This would be a serious problem because you cannot live with zero activity.
In this case, let’s focus on what interests us, the future. A student, once he completes his secondary studies, begins high school. This consists of the preparation to begin university studies but it is well known that it is completely useful to do a higher FP . That is why although this society does not encourage going to university as if it were a safe ballot to find work, they do not really have much idea. By this I mean that having a career does not assure you of anything in your future. In this way, the important thing is to understand that nothing happens if university is not an option for your son or daughter since there are many other options .

EACH ONE HAS SKILLS AND INTERESTS
When they are young, sometimes we can observe and understand that our child has a facility for memorizing and studying documents while other children can be very skilled in practical exercises that require greater control of the body than of the mind.
This division comes when we stop to think about what we want to do tomorrow . After completing the basic studies, you have to chat with your child and ask him what he thinks about the studies and what options he like. Although it is a very general question, we will find answers that we did not expect and we must transmit peace of mind. One of the biggest fears that students have is that their parents decide for them what their dream job for life is going to be, regardless of what you will actually apply later.
An important factor is supporting him in whatever he wants to do . If you see that he is determined and does not doubt his final result, go ahead. In the event that he does not really know what to do (it happens to many people) you should help him to see a range of options. Perhaps you are not concerned with what to do but how. Whatever your child’s response, you have to guide him but remember, you should not pressure him to study something that he does not like. That only brings frustrations with oneself and a perhaps cloudy future.
Once you have decided that what you want to do is, for example, a FP related to the hospitality industry, guide him down that path, do not try to take him another way.
MATTER OF OPTIONS
Not choosing a university is not a problem , it is an alternative. College consists of four years of intensive study on a specific subject. As they pass, they progress through the course until they complete all the subjects, the external internships and the end-of-degree project. The practices that the university has are (depending on the person) better or worse. Usually it does not tend to be a remarkable event in the race. Another problem is that it costs about a thousand euros per year, some less and others more. And finally, doing external internships in a company does not guarantee at all that they will hire you.
In the case of FP , there are medium and higher grade, in some cases they are linked with each other while others start out as a higher grade. It consists of two years (others a single year) and as in the university, you specialize in a field that usually has a much more practical section than that of the university. I do not mean practical in the sense that it is not a theoretical class but requires more manual skill . The good point of FP is that they have very good external internships. You go to work in a company and there are even some who hire you later.
I mean, absolutely nothing happens if you don’t go to college . Nowadays it seems that we should all aspire to university and if we do not enter because we do not want to or because we do not get the grade we feel rejected or frustrated. We come to think that we are not that smart or that we are not worth the same.
This conception of what is worth and what is not, is something created on the fly but the truth is that many people leave university because they are not able to finish it or they feel that it will not contribute anything stable. Contrary to what is thought, university students suffer regarding the labor issue, especially in the field of Humanities where they feel despised by a society that increasingly aspires to the material.
Finally, support your son if he wants to study another way than university . The options are wide and as long as we have the minimum studies we can always follow one path or another and have a balanced life. The university does not guarantee work but it does guarantee a higher salary if you get to work than you have studied. Life is worth looking at in a more pragmatic way and the reality is that VET also work like any other route, without counting more possible routes.
Stability is not brought by the university but by dedication to what you like , so go ahead with your child’s studies, it will surely turn out well.
