During pregnancy, the woman’s body is in constant change, so we can have different and new symptoms. Having a child is a wonderful experience. However, during the gestation process the woman may feel some physical discomfort , such as nausea, dizziness, pain in the lower back, swelling of the ankles and hemorrhoids, among others. The latter are very common in most pregnant women and, although uncomfortable and a bit painful, they do not have to alter your rhythm of life or your baby.
At PregDream we tell you what hemorrhoids are, their symptoms and treatments and why they occur during pregnancy.
WHAT ARE HEMORRHOIDS?
At the end of the anal canal we have a submucosal tissue, called hemorrhoids, which if not inflamed, does not produce pain or discomfort in any of us. However, if these tissues become inflamed and blood flow is interrupted, that is when symptoms appear: a lump and discomfort in the anus.
This inflammation can occur on the outside of the anus or on the inside. So when we go to the doctor’s office, he may insert his finger a little to palmar if the hemorrhoids are inside if he cannot see them outside. If when you go to the bathroom it stings you, you find a little red blood on the toilet paper or your anus hurts when you press to defecate, you probably have the symptoms of hemorrhoids.
When they are very advanced, the pain is so great that it will not be possible for you to sit properly, since the anal canal will continue to hurt. It is best that you go to the doctor as soon as possible , since they can be caused by constipation, poor diet, overweight or lack of exercise and you need to get treatment.
HEMORRHOIDS DURING PREGNANCY
Suffering from hemorrhoids during pregnancy is very common. That’s because the anal canal, like most organs in the woman’s stomach and back, are affected during this time in her life. Especially during the third trimester of pregnancy , the submucosal tissue of the anus tends to become more inflamed than normal due to the pressure of the baby’s weight on the rectum, so future moms who have never had hemorrhoids can now have them. This added weight can also cause a pregnant woman to have constipation problems, so it is best to eat a diet rich in fiber.
By changing eating habits as a treatment we can help relieve hemorrhoids to a great extent. There are cream treatments on the market to apply to the inflamed area, but we must first consult with our doctor or pharmacist , because while pregnant we cannot apply or take any medication that has not been previously prescribed and advised by a health professional.
We can also relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy by drinking a lot of water , taking a couple of short walks a day and trying not to be too nervous or stressed. If we are not well psychologically, this can affect our digestive system and hemorrhoids could become inflamed, causing pain.
When the itching and pain in the anus persist, we can use the bidet with warm water to relieve the affected area. This ailment is uncomfortable, but it does not affect the baby directly. However, this does not mean that we should not treat it as soon as possible in order to have a better pregnancy free of the aches and pains that are common in all pregnant women.
