FIRST STAGE OF LABOR: DILATION
Dilation is the first stage of labor, called by many the last sweet wait. It occurs from when the pregnant woman goes into labor until the cervix has reached the maximum dilation that allows the fetus to emerge, which translates into 10 centimeters.
Within the stages of labor, dilation is the longest since the rate at which it occurs is not the same in all women . During this stage, you notice how the contractions of the uterus are altering . Likewise, it should be noted that this phase of dilation can be very different as well as shorter if it is the second child that is given birth.
As the cervix dilates, the fetus goes down with the intention of positioning itself in order to prepare for its exit. Despite the fact that the distance it has to travel is very short, it must be taken into account that the uterine ducts have to open little by little and what are centimeters apart, can become hours of dilation.
SECOND STAGE OF LABOR: EXPULSIVE
The baby has descended through the cervix and is ready for its arrival into the world. This phase is called expulsive and is the second of the stages of labor. The pains that have caused the numerous previous contractions and dilations, come to nothing when the strong feeling of pushing begins to appear in the body of pregnant women.
Although in many cases this stage is nothing, it is always usually the most painful part and the worst drink of a birth, since it begins from the moment of complete dilation until the baby is already outside. For its part, it should be noted that this feeling of push that occurs is very important and beneficial for the fetus since it is the only help that it has. As with the dilation stage, the expulsive usually occurs more easily if one has been a mother before , which will also be reflected in the time necessary for this, with one to two hours elapsing to have the baby in the world .
THIRD STAGE OF LABOR: DELIVERY
The moment of delivery has always been commonly known as childbirth itself, but actually this third phase of the stages of labor refers to the total exit of the placenta from the woman’s body. If we think about it, labor does not end when the baby has come out, but when the placenta and everything that is created during the 9 months of pregnancy has also come out. This delivery occurs naturally , since the pregnant woman’s body expels the placenta instantly upon delivery of the fetus.
However, and as can occur in any medical case, complications may arise in which the medical team must act. In the event that the pregnant woman’s body does not expel the placenta naturally, heavy bleeding can occur . Throughout the history of life, this has been one of the most frequent causes of deaths of women in childbirth, since many years ago there were neither the right professionals nor the right materials. Today, despite being one of the most frequent complications, it does not usually cause death due to the constant innovation of medicine and the valuable medical team available.
With regard to the many advances that have occurred over time, it is necessary to mention the amount of tests and analyzes that occur after the birth . One of them is the placental examination that is given after its expulsion and that serves to corroborate that there have been no remains in the mother’s uterus and that the baby was connected by the umbilical cord in the correct way.
