WHAT IS MIXED BREASTFEEDING
Mixed breastfeeding consists of feeding the baby both through breast milk and alternating it with a bottle of prepared milk (not previously extracted from the mother’s breast). Normally mothers prefer to feed the baby with breast milk , however there are times when the baby does not tolerate this milk well (perhaps due to an allergy or sensitivity) or the mother has to go to work earlier and cannot spend all the desired time with the baby.
In these cases, the mother can either switch to artificial milk alone or choose to give the child mixed breastfeeding, since if the baby does not reject breast milk, it is better for his natural needs. Therefore, we will alternate the breast with the prepared milk and we will introduce this second one little by little into his diet to make sure that he feels good and this is the best way of feeding for him.
HOW TO PRACTICE MIXED BREASTFEEDING
It is recommended that the mother start by giving the baby breast milk , but if the formula has been given from the beginning and the baby has no problem taking mixed breastfeeding, both types of milk can be intercalated without problems. However, there will be babies who prefer one of the two. It is often believed that the baby will prefer the breast to the bottle, but this is not always true since each child is different.
In order for mixed breastfeeding to work in the best possible way, we can allow the baby to breastfeed for the first few months. In this way, it becomes customary to suck from the breast without harming the mother, since from the nipple we cannot control the force it exerts, and it also receives all the nutrients and vitamins it needs naturally.
As the baby grows, he will need more milk progressively and that is when we can start mixed breastfeeding, since he will breastfeed and acquire the extra food in a prepared way, already aware of how he should breastfeed if he does not want to harm Mother.
As we suggested at the beginning, many mothers consider mixed breastfeeding due to their return to work . However, it is not always necessary to switch to this mode of breastfeeding, because you can continue with breast milk but remove it from the breast. That will depend on the opinion of each mother, but it is always advisable to consult with the pediatrician to advise you which is the most advisable method for your baby and you in your specific case.
When the baby has passed six months of age, in addition to mixed breastfeeding, we can also begin to introduce other foods , always under medical confirmation, of foods in his diet. The most common are cereals, fruits and vegetables, but it is still too early to stop breastfeeding them or give them formula milk.
Also listen to your baby’s needs and their reactions to the two different types of milk, since some mothers prefer to choose one of the two or continue with mixed breastfeeding if they believe that this is the best way to feed their baby. .
