Baby swimming: teach your baby to swim
We explain the best age to start introducing your baby to the pool and the benefits of midwifery.
Swimming for babies, or midwifery (the practice of a baby swimming with his mother or father) is a sport that brings many benefits to both our babies and us.
The practice of swimming with babies is suitable for them to adapt to the water, we must not forget that they spend 9 months floating in the amniotic fluid, therefore it is a natural environment for them.
MIDWIFERY BENEFITS BOTH BABIES AND PARENTS
WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO START?
The recommended age to start the practice of midwifery is 4 months . But we can find some swimming schools that do not admit babies until 6 or 7 months, this reason is because they do not have the facilities adapted for babies so young.
BENEFITS OF MIDWIFERY
The benefits are many, both for mom or dad, and for our little one. We can distinguish between cognitive benefits and psychomotor benefits.
Cognitive benefits in the baby
– Strengthens the affective relationship with the mother or father who accompanies him, or with both.
– Help the baby to find security in a new environment in the arms of their parents.
– The baby begins his socialization outside the family environment, he will interact with monitors, with other parents, and with other babies.
– Their IQ increases, they are more creative and observant.
– These benefits will be very useful for later learning.
Cognitive benefits for mom or dad
– Strengthens the affective relationship with our baby, enriches it. And with our partner if we both go to classes.
– We improve our social relationships, by making contact with other families who are in the same situation as us, friendship bonds are created and we share experiences.
– Helps combat the stress of daily life. To clear your mind and enjoy our son and the water.
Psychomotor benefits in the baby
– They learn notions of displacement .
– Those who still do not walk learn freedom of movement . That will later be useful when learning to walk.
– They strengthen the muscles of the whole body.
– They strengthen the heart and lungs .
– Develop survival skills, floating or turning in the water and turning on your back.
Psychomotor benefits for mom or dad
– We strengthen the muscles of the whole body.
– We burn calories.
– We promote a healthy life with sports and we move away from sedentary lifestyle.
TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SWIMMING WITH BABIES
Schedule. We must choose a suitable time for our baby, which does not coincide with his snack, with his breastfeeding or with his nap time.
Always carry a backpack with the necessary change for the diaper change , or for possible “accidents”.
When leaving the pool, quickly wrap the baby with his towel, as temperature changes can be abrupt.
If our baby is sick we should not go to class.
The father or mother should always wear flip flops , because the floors of the pool are very slippery, in case our baby is already walking they must also wear.
Children should not run alone in the spaces near the pool.
Always have them under absolute surveillance, because although a pool is very fun, we must avoid accidents .
Now we just have to enjoy, go to the water ducks!
