World breastfeeding week
The World Breastfeeding Week, SMLM, is celebrated to sensitize the population to the need to breastfeed.
20 years ago, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organized the first global week in defense of breastfeeding , with the intention of raising awareness of the need to breastfeed the babies breastfed. 20 years later, this initiative continues more alive than ever.
From August 1-7, more than 170 countries around the world celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (SMLM). In this year’s edition, 2012, two anniversaries are celebrated: the twentieth anniversary of the creation of the SMLM and the 10 years of the drafting of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, a text promoted by the World Organization of Health (WHO) and UNICEF.
This year, the motto of the SMLM focuses on the memory of these celebrations: Understanding the past. Planning the future . After two decades working to raise awareness and promote breastfeeding, the SMLM’s main objectives in this year’s edition are to review all the work done and take stock of the achievements to lay the foundations for the lines of work for the next few years.
Despite the fact that large organizations such as the WHO and many health professionals around the world work tirelessly to defend breastfeeding and its many benefits, there is still a long way to go in achieving policies and programs that promote and benefit nutrition. natural for babies and children.
